This November, the UAE Designer Exhibition returns to Downtown Design with a line-up of works by 30 UAE-based creatives, spanning furniture, lighting, objects and experimental materials.
Titled 'Inherited Futures' and conceived by architect and designer AlZaina Lootah, this year's edition explores how the past can shape what comes next. Supported by Dubai Culture, the exhibition treats heritage not as something fixed, but as a starting point.
A sneak peek at a few of the participants shows how that idea runs through the work. Dana Binmahmood looks to the traditional craft of burqa-making for a new console, while Rand Tayfour takes the structure of classical Arabic poetry and translates it into a series of majlis-inspired tables.
Kinda Ghannoum weaves Arabic calligraphy and traditional pattern together with the language of digital pixel art in a collection of carpets. Eman Shafiq, meanwhile, channels the shifting desert sands into a series of lamps, combining her own Biosand material with pink onyx.
Material experimentation is just as present. NUMU has grown a chair from mycelium and date-palm agricultural waste, Jane Sharavova's ceramic research uses materials sourced from the UAE landscape, and BOBR Studio turns reclaimed Dubai tree branches into sculptural lighting. The full line-up of participants can be discovered at Downtown Design this November, offering a glimpse of the futures being built on what came before.
