Nouvelle Vague will exhibit five up and coming French designers with entirely new creations as well as a collaboration with Emirati designer Khalid Shafar.

When Nouvelle Vague presented their first show in 2011, its content as well as its name signified a “new wave” of French design sweeping the entire industry.

Subtitling the show as the ‘New French Domestic Landscape’, the exhibition unveiled five emerging designers at Milan’s Salone del Mobile, before showcasing their work to the rest of the world in a travelling exhibition.

This year, the second edition, includes the work of another five up-and-coming talents: Pauline Deltour, Guillaume Delvigne, François Dumas, Victoria Wilmotte and Dan Yeffet, who have produced a series of new French furniture and object brands. Organised by the Institut Français in the UAE, Nouvelle Vague is coming to the Middle East for the first time. The project is carefully curated by Cedric Morisset and all the works are entirely new creations - free edition prototypes, small production and new editions which will be displayed for the full four days of Downtown Design.

In addition, Emirati designer Khalid Shafar, who is fusing contemporary trends with material and inspiration from his native roots, will have part of his 2014 collection in the exhibition. Shafar was approached by Institute Francais earlier this year to “reflect the creative understanding between both cultures”. He added that such representation is vital for “Dubai’s journey to become the hub of design in the region” and will be presenting a collection of mixed use tables and lighting creations.

Nouvelle Vague, is a window into what is being dubbed as an entrepreneurial frenzy in the design world. The new generation of designers from France are taking risks and showing initiative and grabbing the attention of the rest of the world. Morisset describes the work as “outlining the new contours of the French domestic landscape” as well as forming freedom of expression.
