Speaking to Downtown Design, the designer and entrepreneur outlines why calm and structure are essential as creative businesses navigate these trying times.

A constant fixture on international industry power lists, Kelly Hoppen has built a global brand that encompasses luxury homes for the A-list, hand-crafted furniture collections, coffee table books, a stint on BBC’s Dragon’s Den and an MBE for her services to interior design.

Working with clients and suppliers around the globe, including China, Hoppen had to adapt her UK-based business in the early stages of the pandemic to ensure continuity.

“It is very important to stay calm throughout all of this” insists Hoppen. Whilst it may be difficult maintaining a positive outlook when bombarded with a 24-hours news cycle and working through the realities of running a business, a calm mind will help one plan more effectively. This will allow both employers and employees to prioritise in an efficient manner to respond to the immediate and long-term needs.

“The world is in a terrible crisis, but it is important to maintain stakeholder confidence,” says Hoppen. “As much as possible, try to stick to your deadlines.” This may require adapting how you communicate and deliver your services; adopting modern communication tech is crucial. As businesses shift to working from home and movement is curtailed, deadlines may be impacted – staying connected with clients, supply chain, employees and other stakeholders will boost confidence. “Keep in constant communication with your clients as they need to know that you are continuing to work on their projects regardless of whether you are working remotely or not.”

“Create a daily routine for yourself and the company. This is very important as it gives structure especially when we are working remotely,” she recommends. Whilst social distancing has presented society with a forced digital reality, people still want to be seen, heard and understood. “Make sure you are visually engaging with your staff, virtual meetings will help motivate everyone and reinforce team working.”

This pandemic will end and life will assume a new normal; at this time, maintaining a positive outlook to the future is key. “More so now than ever, it is important to set new goals and priorities, make to-do lists.” Use this time to reflect on the direction you want your business and your employees to take. “Lastly, make sure to do affirmations to yourself each day and stay active through exercise. A positive mindset will give you the energy to work productively.”
