Archive of Matter

Jane Sharavova

Russian designer Jane Sharavova is a Dubai-based ceramic artist working in stoneware and porcelain, treating clay as geology rather than craft. Beginning her practice eleven years ago collecting wild clay in the Russian countryside, she now produces entirely in the UAE, crafting one-of-one, hand-built vessels inspired by the Emirates' desert landscape. Her latest series, Archive of Matter (2025–2026), explores geological processes like fissuring, compression, and sedimentary layering, alongside research into incorporating locally sourced sand, gypsum, and salt crust into her clay bodies and glazes.

Archive of Matter approaches ceramics as a physical translation of natural geology, where raw surfaces retain records of heat, pressure, and rupture. Hand-built, glazed, and fired locally in Dubai without offshore production or overproduction, each unique vessel acts as a fragment lifted directly from the UAE's landscape. The project pairs these finished works with material tests incorporating native desert sand, gypsum, and salt crust, directly testing how the local earth reacts under high heat.
