Design incubator Tashkeel to unveil new range of designer programme Tanween at Downtown Editions, nurturing the growth of local talent.
Tanween will be presenting the designers selected for the 2017/2018 nine-month design programme, with a showcase consisting of four limited-edition pieces, each created by a UAE-based emerging designer, including interior and furniture designer Renad Hussein, graphic designer Hala Al-Ani, interior designer Alya Sultan AlEghfeli and artist Myrtille Labrune-Ronteix.
Each product will reflect traditional and modern elements of culture and design from the Emirates, made of materials including crystalised salt, Arabic coffee grounds, khoos (woven palm leaves) and sand. These UAE inspired creations facilitate a dialogue between regional design and manufacturing communities, whilst stimulating cultural and economic development.
This year’s applicants were carefully selected by a panel including Helen Voce, a member of the creative community; Lateefa bint Maktoum, Founder and Director of of Tashkeel; and Jill Hoyle, Manager of Tashkeel along with other members of the team. The designers created their final products throughout the development process that includes training, mentorship and access to Taskhkeel’s studio and workshop facilities
The Tanween programme allows rising talent the opportunity to develop, produce and retail a range of bespoke pieces that caters to the UAE environment and is designed to further Tashkeel’s commitment to cultivate local talent in contemporary art and design, while Downtown Editions compliments this by functioning as a commercial platform for regional design talent and a bridge to the international industry. Since its inception in 2013, Tanween has enabled 17 UAE-based designers to create editions of 28 limited pieces. The programme continues to grow and evolve to serve and respond to the regional design scene.
